Cohort Introduction

A central facet of the doctoral program is the cohort model of graduate education. Cohort members take all core courses together. This cohort model is a vital source of support for its members and contributes significantly to the development of a community of scholar practitioners. Cohorts are located both on the ASU campus and ASU Center at Hickory, NC.

Cohort members are drawn from all sectors of education. Click here for a brief profile of the members in the two most recent cohorts. Prospective students are encouraged to contact both the program faculty and our current students. Click here for a listing of RCOE Faculty Research Interests and contact information.

The doctoral degree has a minimum 60 credit hour requirement. The core curriculum is 36 credit hours. Additionally, the program requires 12 elective credit hours, 6 internship credit hours and 6 dissertation credit hour. To accommodate our working students, the 36 core curriculum credit hours are offered one afternoon and evening per week (from 3:00-5:30 PM & 6:00-8:30 PM on campus, and 4:00-6:30 PM & 7:00-9:30 PM at Hickory) for two academic years including summer sessions. The remaining hours are completed on an individual basis.

ASU Campus Cohort

Each year on campus, a cohort with 12 student members is created. To apply for the ASU campus cohort, applicants must have a Master's Degree. Applications for the ASU campus cohort are due March 1st of each year. Typically, for each position, there are three to four applicants. Complete application information is found on the ASU Graduate page.

Off Campus Cohorts

Every other year an off-campus doctoral cohort is offered. To apply for the off-campus cohort, applicants must have a Masters Degree and an ASU Ed.S. degree. The off-campus deadline is April 1. The next anticipated off-campus cohort is scheduled to start in 2013. The application deadline will be April 1, 2013

Applicants to the doctoral program who hold an ASU Ed.S. Degree may be exempt from a minimum of 18 doctoral course hours. Upon acceptance in the doctoral program the transcripts of these applicants will be individually reviewed for further possible course exemptions.

All other doctoral applicants, having post-Masters graduate credits, may request to apply a maximum of 9 credit hours for course exemptions.
