Dr. Dustin Evatt-Young, December 2019 graduate of the Doctoral Program, was recently hired as an Associate Director of Career Development at Oberlin College and Conservatory in Oberlin, Ohio. Oberlin College’s Career Development Center helps students and recent alumni identify and achieve meaningful careers that build upon their Oberlin education and experiences. The Career Center assists students with acquiring skills and learning strategies that are critical for career readiness and professional development. As Associate Director of Career Development, Dustin supports students and alumni by helping them explore and navigate their career interests and pathways. He leads Oberlin's Non-Profit & Public Sector and Law & Public Policy Career Communities, teaches undergraduate courses on career development, provides one-on-one career coaching to students, coordinates departmental assessment efforts, and works closely with faculty and staff to integrate career readiness efforts into classroom and co-curricular settings.
When asked how the doctoral program has prepared him for his current role, Dustin stated, "throughout my doctoral journey, I became a stronger learner, writer, and listener. The program prepared me to take the next step in my career by deepening my awareness and knowledge of equity and inclusion issues in education. More importantly, I am able to apply theoretical understandings into my daily practice with students and colleagues. The doctoral program broadened my perspectives of education through deep introspection and reflection, faculty mentorships, and engagement with my cohort members. The cohort model provides a solid community of scholars who turn into friends, mentors, and your cheerleaders to help you cross the finish line."
