This past week, AppState’s Doctoral Program members attended the 2023 CPED Convening in Pensacola, Florida. This year’s conference theme was “Innovation and Education: Identifying and working to address problems of practice embedded in a variety of organizational settings.” The conference creates a space for Ed.D. programs and students from around the country to come together and discuss pressing issues related to doctoral education and research.
Drs. Star Brown and Dramaine Freeman led a very successful presentation called “Structuring Student Support from Admission to Graduation: The Roles of the Doctoral Advisor and Dissertation Coach.” The EdD program at Appalachian State is unique in offering the student support staff roles of Doctoral Student Advisor and Dissertation Coach.
Dr. Vachel Miller and Dr. Chris Osmond also delivered an impactful presentation called “GPT+QE=OMG! Responding to the Possibilities and Challenges of AI in the Development of Scholar-Practitioners.” The role of artificial intelligence in the context of doctoral studies is a concern for the production of original scholarly work both during coursework and dissertation development. Drs. Miller and Osmond did excellent work highlighting the positive and negative implications of these evolving technologies.
The annual Convening offered a track of student-oriented sessions on the second day, followed by an EdD student networking session and poster gallery. LaShawndra White, a current doctoral candidate, prepared a poster representing her dissertation study entitled “The Experiences of Black Women Leaders in Predominantly White Institutions.” Ms. White also participated in an EdD student panel organized as a fishbowl discussion.
