Carly May, a current Ed.D. doctoral student at Appalachian State University, recently embarked on a new professional journey as the Executive Director of Hands and Feet of Asheville, a local nonprofit organization. The nonprofit operates an independent service year program, where fellows dedicate 11 months to full-time service at various local nonprofit partners. Much like AmeriCorps, the program provides fellows with valuable hands-on experience in community-based work, helping them develop leadership and professional skills.
Central to the mission of Hands and Feet of Asheville is the integration of service, justice, and spirituality. Through this approach, the organization not only invests in the personal and professional growth of its fellows but also enhances the capacity of local nonprofits, thereby strengthening the community.
This year, the program is placing a significant emphasis on Hurricane Helene relief efforts, preparing fellows to address urgent needs while also expanding the reach and resilience of their nonprofit partners. May is enthusiastic about her new role and looks forward to collaborating with the fellows and partners in the vital work that lies ahead.
