What are your current research interests, projects, and grants?

  1. Exploring the institutionalized systems, structures, policies, and cultural contexts that preclude or promote the achievement of racially minoritized students

  2. Assessing the historical, legal, and policy implications of higher education

  3. The impact of the climate crisis through a social and racial justice lens

  4.  How Black students cultivate joy on their college campuses

What are some of your main goals as an instructor related to student learning?

My main goals as an instructor are to create a supportive, engaging, and inclusive learning environment that empowers students to develop critical thinking skills, a love for learning, and apply what they've learned to real-world situations. As most of our Doc students are educational practitioners, I find it important to encourage students to be active participants in their own learning.

What advice do you have for doctoral students?

Celebrate EVERY milestone—I literally mean every single one. This can be completing a semester of coursework, turning in a difficult paper, submitting QEs to graduating. Continuously reflect on the hard work, dedication, and perseverance that got you where you are. Celebrate your accomplishments, especially the small ones, as they are all steps toward earning your doctorate.

What’s your favorite thing about Appalachian State University?

As there are many things I enjoy about App State, I have to say my heart resides within the RCOE community. I have found that the RCOE has a commitment to fostering a strong sense of community, and that is something I deeply appreciate. The close-knit environment and friendly, supportive colleagues have created a welcoming atmosphere that enhances my work and makes every day enjoyable. I also appreciate the experiential learning and student engagement, especially the MA and Doc students. I find it fulfilling to work with motivated and curious students who are eager to learn and actively participate in their education.

What is your favorite quote?

“My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humor, and some style.” ― Maya Angelou
