Quote from Dr. Julie Hasson about her experience as Committee Chair:

“As a former principal and a mother, I made multiple connections with Olivia's findings. As a qualitative researcher, I enjoyed providing guidance through her research journey. Olivia demonstrated the sef-direction and persistence needed to finish a dissertation, and it was a pleasure to be her chair.”

Quote from Dr. Julie Hasson about the significance of this dissertation study:

“Olivia Sikes explored the complex (and often competing) roles of motherhood and school leadership. Her study illuminated the challenges women experience in simultaneously enacting both roles, as well as the benefits to their schools. Through in depth and ongoing work with a focus group, Olivia elicited the narratives of women with a range of experience as school leaders and mothers. After analyzing these narratives, she was able to identify common themes and provide recommendations for mother/leaders and for the school districts in which they work. Mentoring, support, and flexible schedules were identified as essential for the success and well-being of mother/leaders. This study contributes to the understanding of role conflict and ways women lead at a time when school districts are seeking a more diverse pool of school leaders.”
